Packaging machinery enables sustainability

Packaging Machinery: responsible handling of natural resources

The Food and Packaging Machinery Association within VDMA is part of the Blue Competence Initiative. Our member companies supply energy-efficient and resource-friendly solutions which save on both energy and materials and thus will reduce costs. Rising prices for raw materials used as packaging materials and the growing customer awareness that waste must be reduced make it ever more imperative to look for new options in the packaging technology. Today, more and more customers worldwide already include ecological criteria in their decision-making processes when choosing a product.

A responsible handling of natural resources and eco-friendly management is highly prioritised by our member companies. Over the last years, they have resolutely made both operational and production processes sustainable und have realised eco- and resource-friendly packaging solutions. The manufacturers of packaging machinery are well aware that sustainable production processes are highly favoured by their customers.

Optimal use of packaging materials will save resources

Sustainable packaging solutions lower the consumption of packaging materials e.g. by reduced film thickness or by minimising edge trims and punching scraps. Improved film packaging systems are so versatile that they can process both conventional and extra-thin bio-film.

New secondary packaging for PET bottle batches will reduce the consumption of materials. Strapping bands, a new packaging concept, will make the usual shrink foil redundant. Dispensing with shrink tunnels considerably cuts down on energy consumption. At the same time, palettes will offer more space.

A holistic approach will minimise the consumption of resources

Every new step in a production line will raise the value of the manufactured product. Before the packaging process even starts, the consumption of resources is already very high. Constructive changes and new procedures which impact back on the entire process and thus create a good yield, contribute greatly to the saving of resources. New sealing techniques (among others) handle the product to be packaged with care and considerably shorten process times. Using new packaging technology also increases the shelf-life of products and thus reduces food loss, thereby again saving on resources.
